Gain an understanding of the rights, obligations and liability issues associated with the role of director. This course pack reviews important information, such as bylaws, board development, and volunteer program management. Gain and understanding of the rights, obligations and liability issues associated with the role of director. The course pack takes approximately seven hours to complete.
Liability and Risk ManagementLearn about the two most common forms of protection for directors are Directors and Officers Liability Insurance and incorporation of the non-profit organization. Review the ways in which a director must protect him or herself in the context of meetings, personnel, finances, through training and so on.
Legal Duties and ObligationsAs society becomes more litigation-oriented, non-profit organizations need to be as transparent as possible. You will learn about a board member’s legal duties and obligations, define concepts of the organization and examine the three types of liability that directors typically are faced with.
Rights and Powers of DirectorsIn this module, you will examine the types of documents to which directors should have access, ways in which their powers can be exercised, conflict of interest relating to liability issues, and examine some of the basic powers available to a corporation as provided in the Canada Corporations Act.
This module provides some general guidelines that directors of federal non-profit corporations can use to review their rights and powers. This module focuses on federally, and not provincially, incorporated non-profit organizations.
Introduction to Non-Profit OrganizationsThis module provides an introduction to non-profit organizations and an overview of the duties and expectations of board members.
Registered Charities and De-regulationIn this module, learn the difference between non-profit status and registered charity status in relationship to adhering to taxation laws. Learn about the activities that charitable organizations must be engage themselves in and understand the requirements in regards to spending on those activities.
Liability and CommitteesThis module examines the two main types of committees in non-profit organizations, how clearly defined responsibilities should be elaborated in a committee’s Terms of Reference, and the notion of a committee’s ability to legally bind an organization. You will learn that from a liability perspective, a director needs to strike a balance between the amount of power a committee has and how and when a director should monitor its activities.

Non-Profit and Community Development Certificate
This five course program shows how communities can shape their future and design innovative projects. Topics include: connected communities, community development business plans, and assessing your community’s entrepreneurial readiness. The program takes approximately five hours to complete. Users will recieve a certificate of completion upon finishing the course pack.

This module examines healthy communities; the worldwide Smart Communities movement, in which Canada is a leading player; and the role of technology in supporting healthy communities.
The New Community DevelopmentLearn how communities are initiating, organizing, and taking action to further common interests and achieve common goals. In short, they are taking ownership of the decisions and resources that influence their future.
This new approach is called community-based development. In this module we will examine the new community development and its focus on sustainability, identify factors that contribute to success, and look at ways to assess your readiness to develop and sustain positive growth.
Entrepreneurial CommunitiesToday's rapidly changing economic and social environment is creating new opportunities as well as challenges for community development. Communities that use their resources to exploit these new opportunities are entrepreneurial communities - resourceful, realistic and adaptable.
This module is an introduction to entrepreneurial communities and their approach to community development. Learn the characteristics and skills of the new community leaders known as civic entrepreneurs and explore strategies for developing and promoting communities online.
Community Development Business PlanIn this module you’ll learn a three-part process for implementing a Community Development Business Plan. Review the components of an effective business plan, access a simple model for an Income Statement and learn to analyze the revenues and expenditures associated with the venture. We will examine strategies for accessing the funds you need to implement your development project, and give you tools for researching sources of capital.
