The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) established a framework for the development, implementation and enforcement of accessibility standards that may apply to public, private and non-profit sectors across Ontario. As part of this process non-profit organizations will eventually have to comply with certain standards related to customer service, transportation, information and communications, the built environment and employment. This interactive workshop will provide participants and organizations with some practical information about the accessibility standards and help organizations move beyond the standards towards the development of fully inclusive environments for those with disabilities.

Where: Quality Suites, 754 Bronte Road, Oakville
Cost: $40 per person OR $35 if you register prior to January 27th
The whole point of a Board is that it is not a one-woman or a one-man show. Your board's diversity ideally means that a wide variety of viewpoints are enriching the decisions that are shaping your organization's future. Yet these different viewpoints can easily confuse rather than clarify if they are not ultimately expressed in one-voice leadership. In this practical workshop, working with three-time governance author Caroline Oliver and fellow participants, you will examine and find answers to the following questions:
- How diverse is our board really?
- How can we get full value from our diversity?
- What does it take to translate diversity into one-voice leadership?
Using cases provided by participants and from Caroline's fifteen years of international consulting experience, this workshop is a real opportunity to take a fresh look at how the dynamics of board teams can be developed and improved in order to deliver organizational success.

The principles, skills and techniques of "Lean" have shown great potential for making operational processes (client intake, service provision, program delivery) faster, more efficient less error-prone and more client-driven.
The principles, skills and techniques of project management have shown great potential for creating new capabilities (systems, improved methods etc) on time, on-budget and that meet stakeholder requirements.
These two disciplines have now grown to be widespread practices in many organizations in the public sector, especially within larger organizations in the health and community care sector. This very success is raising important questions for managers, project managers, project sponsors and project teams about how to optimally manage the interface between these two disciplines. These questions include:
- How can we best organize projects to achieve the opportunities identified from analyzing our end-to-end process (or value stream) at lowest risk? (Project Scoping)
- How can we gain the benefits of lean thinking in our project delivery? (so called "Agile" techniques)
- How do we know whether a project, which looked good on paper, is actually delivering what is most needed to improve the operational process? (quality metrics and acceptance criteria)
- What are the implications in terms of skill and knowledge levels needed for individuals, teams and organizations seeking to exploit both lean and project management? (threshold competencies)
Facilitator Tom Barker is a principal at Process Design Consultants; a Toronto firm committed to helping organizations improve performance by setting clearer intentions, structuring initiatives and sustaining stakeholder commitment. Tom has worked with several local organizations, both corporate and non-profit. He is the author of Leadership For Results: Removing Barriers to Success for People, Projects, and Processes.
